Talking is the voice of human, singing is the voice of soul.
– Clarissa Pinkola Estés

There is something powerful about choosing to sing as an adult. Whether you are starting for the first time, returning after years away, or wanting to take an already developed voice further, singing lessons can help you reconnect with your voice and build greater skill, freedom, stamina, range, consistency and confidence.

Lessons give you the opportunity to discover what your voice is capable of — and to experience the moment when something that once felt out of reach begins to feel possible.

At Melbourne Voiceworks, we offer supportive singing lessons for adults in Lilydale and online, helping students develop strong vocal technique, confidence, expression and greater freedom in their voice.

Our goal is to help you understand your own voice – how it works, what it can do, and how to use it in a way that feels healthy, expressive and meaningful to you.

It is never too late to sing – or to take your voice further

Adult singers arrive with very different stories.

Some have always wanted to sing but never had the opportunity. Some have been told they “can’t sing” and are ready to rewrite that story. Some are returning after years away from music. Others already have performance experience, but want to feel more technically secure, expressive or vocally reliable.

Wherever you are starting from, you are welcome.

At Melbourne Voiceworks, lessons are shaped around the student in front of us – your voice, confidence, goals, musical tastes and pace of learning. You do not need to arrive with a polished sound or years of training. And if you do already have experience, lessons can help you refine your technique, expand your choices and continue growing as a singer.

Confidence that grows through understanding

Confidence in singing does not come from forcing the voice or trying to sound like someone else. It grows when your voice starts to feel more familiar, more reliable and less mysterious.

In lessons, you will learn how to approach your voice with curiosity rather than judgement. You may work on how to release unnecessary tension, access more range, strengthen tone, improve pitch, manage breath, develop your mix or belt, and sing with greater ease and control.

For some adults, confidence means singing in front of another person for the first time. For others, it means preparing for a performance, getting through a full set with more stamina, or learning how to sing with more expression and emotional connection.

Those such moments can be incredibly powerful, because students begin to hear what is possible in their own voice – and realise it is something they can keep developing, trusting and feeling proud of.

Singing lessons shaped around your goals

Every adult student brings something different into the lesson room. A different voice, different musical background, different goals, different fears, different strengths.

Some students want to sing purely for enjoyment. Some want to build confidence. Some are preparing for auditions, performances, gigs, worship, community theatre or band work. Others want to improve technique, expand range, reduce strain, or understand why certain parts of the voice have always felt difficult.

Lessons may include work on:

  • vocal strength, range and flexibility
  • pitch, rhythm and vocal control
  • breath management and resonance
  • tone, clarity and expressive colour
  • mix voice and belt technique
  • vocal stamina and consistency
  • reducing strain and vocal tension
  • microphone technique
  • performance confidence and stage presence
  • storytelling and emotional connection
  • audition, gig or performance preparation

Song work is always connected back to your voice, helping you understand how to sing with more ease, intention and confidence.

For adults who sing, perform or want to take their voice further

Adult singers often come to lessons with very specific goals. You may be singing lead vocals in a band, preparing for a gig, wanting more confidence with a microphone, or trying to build the stamina to get through a full set without strain.

Lessons can support singers who want to refine their sound, strengthen technique, improve vocal reliability, and make more confident choices across contemporary styles such as pop, rock, soul, jazz, acoustic and musical theatre.

We can work on areas such as vocal power without strain, increasing vocal range and stamina, mix and belt technique, phrasing, microphone technique, performance presence, emotional connection, stylistic choices, song interpretation and recovering more easily between songs.

Whether you are stepping into performance for the first time or wanting to feel more vocally secure on stage, lessons are shaped around the kind of singer you are becoming.

Music you genuinely connect with

Adults are often most inspired when they sing music that means something to them.

At Melbourne Voiceworks, students are encouraged to bring in songs they love, while repertoire suggestions are offered as options to help them explore songs that support their development and build confidence.

We work across a range of contemporary styles, including pop, musical theatre, rock, jazz, country, soul and more. Whether you love expressive ballads, musical theatre storytelling, classic songs, contemporary vocals, cover band repertoire or something else, lessons are designed to equip you the tools needed to sing the music you love.

Returning to singing after time away

Many adults return to singing after years, or even decades, away from it. This can feel exciting, and sometimes a little vulnerable.

The voice may not feel exactly as it once did, or you may be discovering parts of it for the first time. Lessons provide a supportive way to rebuild confidence, help you rediscover your voice, and learn how to get the sounds you want in a sustainable, healthy manner.

You do not need to “get back to where you were” before returning to lessons. The lesson room is where that rebuilding can begin, as we gently demystify the process and help you understand the steps you need to take.

Performance opportunities for adults

For students who are interested, Melbourne Voiceworks offers supportive performance opportunities throughout the year, including performance classes and end of year student concerts.

These experiences are not about perfection. They are about celebrating you progress, learning how to stay present, connect with a song, manage nerves, recover calmly if something doesn’t go according to plan, and discover that performing can become something meaningful, expressive and enjoyable.

For many students, performance becomes a turning point. They begin to trust their voice more deeply, communicate with greater confidence, celebrate their growth and experience the joy of expressing a song with meaning and connection.

Participation is always optional. Students who prefer not to perform can have an equally meaningful journey focused on personal vocal growth, confidence, expression and the joy of singing in each lesson.

A warm, professional place to grow

Adult singers need a teacher who can listen beyond the sound – understanding their goals, their concerns, their relationship with their voice, and the kind of singer they are wanting to become.

At Melbourne Voiceworks, we create a learning space where students can explore their voice with curiosity, build technique with confidence, and develop a sound that feels healthy, expressive and authentically their own.

Lessons offer a balance of warmth and clear guidance – a place where you can feel supported as a person, while still developing real vocal skill.

Lisa is an extremely professional Singing teacher. Her many qualifications and years of experience shine through every lesson. But the best thing she does is encourage and reassure you as you find your skills grow. She is an amazing individual and an inspiration to everyone she teaches, I know this because she teaches my children. I have been with her for years and I have improved dramatically.

I've always had an interest in singing, but never really thought about developing it, much less performing in front of other people. Lisa has really helped me stepped out of my comfort zone, and reached tones with quality I never thought possible. She's been nothing but supportive, and I always feel comfortable in sharing the songs I'd love to learn to perform.

Lisa is an absolutely AMAZING vocal coach. She’s patient, understanding and has the most welcoming aura. I was so nervous to sing infront of anyone - even my own mother. And since only having a few sessions with her I feel my singing style has improved and I’ve gained confidence to sing infront of others. She’s super accommodating and just a lovely person. I HIGHLY recommend her!!! Oh and don’t get me started on her prices they are absolutely affordable and worth it with the work she puts into the sessions. She has a great understanding of music especially in the voice department 🤩 I WILL be booking with her again!

Lisa is an absolutely incredible voice teacher!! Not only is she super talented and kind hearted, she is great to help you work towards your personal singing goals, providing specific exercises that cater to your needs and always checking to see if things are working for you. She is amazing with communication and problem solving (offering online lessons, dealing with technical difficulties etc.), and I have grown so much in both skills and confidence from my lessons with her!

“I’ve known and worked with Lisa at Melbourne Voiceworks for around 11 years and can highly recommend her. We’ve worked together both in the studio and in live settings over the years, and I’ve often referred clients to her when they need help developing their vocals and moving toward a more professional level. Lisa is very experienced, highly qualified, and has had songs placed in American ads and a feature film. She’s also very easy to work with and genuinely cares about helping her students improve. Highly recommend!”

As someone who had never sung in front of anyone and had zero singing lessons under my belt, I was seriously nervous walking in. But from my very first session at Melbourne Voiceworks, all that anxiety disappeared.

Lisa is everything you’d hope for in a vocal coach......patient, incredibly encouraging, and most importantly, FUN. She creates such a relaxed, supportive environment that you forget you were ever nervous in the first place. We’ve worked across different styles and genres, and I was honestly surprised at how quickly I progressed.

If you’re thinking about singing lessons, whether you’re a total beginner like I was or looking for a fresh start, I can’t recommend Melbourne Voiceworks enough. It’s the perfect place to build confidence, skill, and actually enjoy the journey.

I can't be more appreciative of the achievements, support, and encouragement Lisa has given me over these few years that I have undertaken singing classes with her.

I grow more confident and find massive enjoyment each week.

Lisa knows where and how to train, I would say every voice. I am sure. In knowing, learning and understanding what Lisa is hearing and observing in my voice when I learn to sing, I get more clarity of how my voice is progressing and the relative techniques involved so those hearing me sing truly get to appreciate the enjoyment that I get from singing. I believe which is every singers hope and dream.

Thank you Lisa and Melbourne Voiceworks.

I have been singing with Melbourne Voiceworks for a few years now, and Lisa has really helped me to develop my vocals, but also helped me gain confidence in performing, and understand my own voice better. My lessons with her are always so fun, and help me so much in learning new songs and techniques. She has also extremely helped me in being able to sing well, but also safely. 100% the best singing teacher I have ever had!

I have been learning to sing with Lisa for about 14 months. I had never sung before in front of anyone and thought l was delusional but as a semi mature adult l thought l would give it a go. Lisa was very encouraging and supportive from the outset and over time l have really begun to loosen up and trust her advice and my singing has improved. Lisa's dedication to me and her technical advice has helped me with challenges l have faced such as broadening my range, feeling comfortable without straining and my tongue sometimes stays out of the way!. Lisa is very sincere and builds an easy and trusted rapport.
If you are seeking out a teacher to guide you to become a better singer and enjoy the process, l highly recommend Lisa to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The beauty of singing is that it’s not limited to a particular age or stage of life. Many adults begin lessons because singing is something they have always wanted to explore, while others return after years away from music.

Lessons are shaped around your voice and where you would love to take it — helping you build vocal skill, confidence and the rewarding feeling of discovering what your voice can do with the right guidance.

That’s completely okay. Many adults begin lessons unsure of what their voice can do.

You do not need to arrive knowing how to sing, sounding polished, or having years of experience. Singing lessons are the place where your voice can be explored, understood, strengthened and developed with the right guidance.

At Melbourne Voiceworks, we meet you where you are and guide you with practical tools, encouragement and care, so you can begin developing your voice from your own starting point.

Yes. Many adult singers come to lessons because they want to feel more confident and have their voice feel reliable in performance settings.

Lessons can support areas such as vocal stamina, overcoming strain, increasing vocal range and agility, developing vocal tone, microphone technique that enhances your sound, stylistic choices, mix and belt technique, phrasing, stage presence, and singing with more freedom.

That is very normal, and more common than many people realise. Singing can feel vulnerable because the voice is deeply personal – it carries our emotion, personality and self-expression. It is also one of the primary ways we connect with the outside world, which is why using it more openly can feel both powerful and vunerable.

Lessons are designed to feel supportive, encouraging and free from judgement, giving you space to rebuild confidence while learning practical tools that help your voice feel freer, stronger and more reliable.

Students are encouraged to bring in music they love and connect with. We work across a range of contemporary styles, including pop, musical theatre, rock, jazz, country, soul and more.

We can also offer repertoire suggestions to help you explore songs that support your development and further strengthen your voice.
