Any parent with a special needs kid is aware of the challenges to find that kid’s adequate educational resources. Besides finding a facility that can offer quality education for their kid’s special needs, financing can also be quite challenging. Fortunately, there are several top-notch scholarships available across the world today. And one of such top-notch scholarship is the John M. McKay Scholarship for Students with Disabilities Program.
What is the McKay Scholarship Program?
The McKay Scholarship Florida was created in 1999 for students with disabilities from grades K to 12 to attend a McKay approved private or public school of their choice. The program was set up by M. McKay in conjunction with the Florida Department of Education. Hence, their target is the students with disabilities that bases in Florida.
Before any student can apply, he or she must be documented as having intellectual disability, a hearing impairment, a visual impairment, a speech or language impairment, emotional disability, autism spectrum disorder, orthopedic impairment, dual sensory impairment, and other health impairment.
To be eligible for the program, your kid must be on a 504 Plan or has an IEP, and the student must be in public school for a full year. Other criteria include:
- At the time of the application, the student must be enrolled in a Florida public school
- Be registered currently in a Florida public school.
- The applicant must have enrolled and reported for funding in a Florida public school during the preceding October and February.
- You must have filled intent on the public school choice site to inform the school district in an electronic or written form for the record of not less than 60 days before the date of the first payment.
- As a parent, you must have gotten acceptance for admission of the student to a participating private school.
Who pays for the scholarship?
The scholarship is funded by state funds. When your kid goes to public school, the school, your kid, attends is allotted funds for each student. Moreover, after you qualify for the McKay Scholarship Florida, you can take your funding and go to an approved McKay private school to get your kid’s assistance he or she requires.
A check will be mailed to the new private school you enroll your kid four times a year. And you will be required to confirm the check so the school can deposit your funds.
How long does the scholarship last?
The McKay Scholarship lasts until the student turns 22 years, graduates from high school, or goes back to a public school - whichever comes first. The kids in private schools can return to public school but must be through McKay Scholarship public school selection. However, you must notify the district beforehand.
